Flin Flon RCMP responded to a report of an infant in medical distress in the Town of Flin Flon on August 11th.
Police and paramedics arrived to find a 10-month old girl, Chase Pearl McCallum-Fleury, deceased.
In January 2021 police declared the death to be a homicide. According to reports Alexander Bear, who was in a relationship with the child’s mother at the time, volunteered to watch the baby after her mother’s child-care plans fell through. It was also reported that McCallum-Fleury suffered a broken arm while in the care of Brear.
On March 23, 2021, 25-year-old Robert Alexander Bear, of Sandy Bay, SK, and charged him with second-degree murder.
Bear was convicted of second-degree murder on July 7, 2023. While that conviction carries a mandatory life sentence with no chance of parole for at least 10 years, Court of King’s Bench Justice Sheldon Lanchbery raised the minimum time before Bear can apply for parole to 13 years.
