Update: Everton Downey found guilty of Second Degree Murder – Police investigate a fatal stabbing of Melissa Blimkie at the Metropolis at Metrotown in Burnaby

Burnaby RCMP responded to a report of a stabbing in the entrance to Metropolis at Metrotown on December 19th at 11:40 a.m.

Police and paramedics arrived to find a person suffering from serious injuries. They were rushed to hospital where they died of their injuries.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has taken over the investigation. If you were in the Metrotown area between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. today, December 19, and saw anything suspicious, you are asked to contact the IHIT Information Line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448), or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.

Update December 20th
After a brief search in Metrotown area, one person was located and arrested by the Burnaby RCMP. Police are able to confirm that the suspect and victim are known to each other and the stabbing was not a random incident. IHIT said the identification of the victim and suspect are not being released at this time. 

Update January 20th
Everton Downey, 31, has been charged with second-degree murder of 25-year-old Melissa Blimkie of North Vancouver. According to IHIT the victim and accused were in a relationship for some time prior to the homicide.

Update August 21, 2025, Everton Downey, now 34 years old, appeared at the Vancouver Supreme Court where Justice Heather Holmes found Mr. Downey guilty of second-degree murder in relation to the homicide of Melissa Blimkie.
