In the early hours of September 6, 2025, just after 1:15 a.m., Winnipeg police responded to a report of a violent assault at a condo complex in the 600 block of St. Anne’s Road.
Upon arrival, police discovered two women outside the building, both suffering from severe upper-body injuries. One of the victims, 46-year-old Nicole Micheline Fortier, was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but later died from her injuries. The second victim, a 27-year-old woman, was initially listed in unstable condition but has since been upgraded to stable.
With assistance from the K9 Unit and AIR1 helicopter, officers conducted a search of the surrounding area and located a male suspect in the 500 block of St. Anne’s Road. He was taken into custody, and the Homicide Unit assumed control of the investigation.
The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Sonny Besskkaystare, has been charged with second-degree murder and aggravated assault. He remains in custody.
Investigators confirmed that Fortier had previously been in a relationship with the accused. The second woman, however, had no connection to him and was randomly attacked before the suspect fled the scene.
