A years-long investigation into the disappearance of a York Region man has led to criminal charges after authorities determined the case was a homicide.
Roman Perelstein was reported missing by his family on August 30, 2022. Investigators learned he had last been seen several weeks earlier near Bathurst Street and Orchard Heights Boulevard in Aurora.
Just days before the missing person report was filed, human remains were discovered on August 21, 2022, along a trail near Sideline 20 and Concession Road 8 in Pickering. Due to the condition of the remains, investigators were unable to identify the individual at the time.
In March 2025, forensic investigators successfully identified the remains as those of Perelstein through dental records. Following the identification, authorities determined that his death was the result of a homicide.
After an extensive investigation by the York Regional Police Cold Case Section, 49-year-old Suren Khizguiiaev of Harwich Township was arrested and charged on May 21, 2026, with Accessory After the Fact to Murder and Indignity to a Dead Body.
Police say the investigation remains active and are continuing to seek information related to the case.
