At around 4:52 a.m. on January 13, 2025, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services responded to a blaze at a home near 118 Avenue and 122 Street. Inside the residence, first responders found a 78-year-old woman, later identified as Susan Harlan. She was rushed to hospital with serious injuries. A 70-year-old man, also in the home, managed to escape unharmed. Both were family members who lived at the residence.

Authorities later determined that the fire had been intentionally set. As a result, Edmonton Police Service (EPS) launched an arson investigation.

Tragically, on February 28, 2025, Harlan died in hospital due to her injuries. On May 6, the Medical Examiner confirmed that her death was caused by complications from thermal injuries and smoke inhalation. Her death has now been officially ruled a homicide.

EPS Homicide detectives are continuing their investigation and are asking for the public’s help in identifying a suspect who was captured on surveillance footage.

Anyone with information is encouraged to come forward. Anyone who recognizes the individual pictured and/or recalls any suspicious activity in the area the morning of the fire, is asked to please contact the EPS at 780-423-4567
