The Calgary Police Homicide Unit is actively investigating a suspicious death that occurred early this morning, Sunday, January 12, 2025. At approximately 5:20 a.m., police were called to the 700 block of Fifth Street S.W., after a passerby reported finding a man unresponsive on the sidewalk.

Upon arrival, officers located an adult male who was deceased at the scene. Given the circumstances, the death is being treated as suspicious, and investigators are working to determine the cause.

The victim has been identified as 34-year-old Samuel Mulugeta, of Calgary.

Police said before being located on the sidewalk, they believed Mulugeta walked along the Third Street S.W. C Train platform at approximately 4:20 a.m. when he crossed paths with a group of believed to be known to him.

During the interaction, it is believed Samuel was robbed of his belongings and suffered an injury, later resulting in his death. Evidence suggests this was a targeted attack and police believe Mulugeta walked for several blocks while injured before he succumbed to his injuries on the sidewalk where he was later located.

Authorities are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying three suspects involved in a recent incident. The suspects, described as a woman and two men, are believed to have been involved in a serious event, and police are working to gather crucial information that could lead to their apprehension.

1. First Suspect – Female The first suspect is described as a woman with a medium build and light-coloured hair that is shaved on the sides. She was last seen wearing a black jacket, black pants, and light-coloured boots. Additionally, she was carrying a backpack at the time of the incident.
2. Second Suspect – Male The second suspect is a man who was seen wearing a dark-coloured jacket, black pants, and black shoes. He was also carrying a bag when last observed.
3. Third Suspect – Male The third suspect is a man with a medium build. He was last seen wearing a black jacket, light-coloured pants, and a black-and-white hat. He was also wearing black shoes and carrying a bag.

Update: Jennifer Lee CASWELL, 43, and Steven Morris FIRINGSTONEY, 41, have each been charged with second-degree murder. They remain in custody. CASWELL will next appear in court on Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2025. FIRINGSTONEY will next appear in court on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2025.
