Update: Alexander Jolly & Maitland Doran charged – York Regional Police Homicide Unit investigates the death of 22-year-old Nicole Mercer in Newmarket

York Regional Police responded to a residence in the area of Prospect Street and Gorham Street for a report of an injured person on July 29th at 1:30am.

On arrival police located an injured 22-year-old woman. She was rushed to hospital where she was pronounced deceased. Homicide Unit investigators have taken over the investigation.

Anyone in the area with residential video surveillance or dashcam footage that may have captured anything suspicious to please come forward.

Update August 2nd
Police have identified as Nicole Mercer, 22, from the City of Toronto, and the cause of death was a gunshot wound.

Update August 10th
An arrest warrant has been issued for the suspect Alexander JOLLY, who is considered armed and dangerous. He is described as

  • 6’2”, 150 lbs. and thin build
  • Fair complexion, brown straight hair and blue eyes

York Regional Police Homicide Unit has charged 23-year-old Alexander Jolly with:

  • Second Degree Murder
  • Possession of a Firearm
  • Possession of a Prohibited Weapon

18-year-old Maitland Doran has been charged with:

  • Accessory After the Fact to Murder
  • Possession of a Firearm
  • Possession of a Prohibited Weapon
