Winnipeg Homicide #8 – Taxi driver Balvir Toordies dies after serious assault

Winnipeg Police responded to a taxi cab driver in distress on March 19th at approximately 5:25am.

Police arrived to find a Duffy’s taxi stopped in the roadway in the 500 block of Burrows Avenue. Police located the driver who had been seriously assaulted. The victim was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries.

Update March 20th
Winnipeg police have identified the victim as Balvir Toordies, 44. On March 20th at approximately 9:15pm police arrested Okoth Obeing, 20, and charged him with second-degree murder. WPS said Investigators believe that Obeing had called for a cab, and stabbed the driver Mr. Toordies in an unprovoked violent attack. Obeing then fled and the driver was able to activate his emergency light which was observed by individuals in the area who contacted police.
