Ottawa police were called to the 1200 block of Bowmount St. at approximately 12:25am on October 31st.

On arrival, officers located Kieu Lam, 88, deceased and said they are investigating the death as a homicide. The victim’s two daughters Chau Khanh LAM, 56, and Hue Ai LAM, 59 have both been charged with first degree murder.

Update August 4th, 2025 – Chau and Hue Lam were acquitted of first-degree murder charges in the 2022 death of their 88-year-old mother, Kieu, after five days of jury deliberation at the Ottawa Courthouse.

While the sisters acknowledged they caused their mother’s death as she slept, the jury concluded they acted in self-defence, citing their claims of enduring long-term abuse. The two women had remained in custody from the time of their arrest until the verdict was delivered.

Crown prosecutors alleged the killing was intentional and brutal, whereas the defence argued the sisters had suffered years of control, violence, and emotional neglect. During the trial, Chau took the stand and admitted she had been angry at the time of the incident.
