Surrey RCMP received a complaint from the Surrey Fire Department regarding the sudden death of a man inside a residence on August 27 at approximately 11:47 a.m.

Police arrived at the residence and located the 56-year-old Robb MEMORY of Surrey deceased.

A 42-year-old man was arrested at the scene and there is no risk to public safety. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has been called and will be working in partnership with Surrey RCMP.

Update Sept 1, 2023, a charge of second-degree murder was laid against the accused, Paul Martin of Surrey, who remains in police custody.

Update September 23rd 2026: According to CTV News, Paul John Martin was found guilty of second-degree murder last week in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster following a trial that got underway in March, according to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT).

Because the conviction carries a mandatory life sentence, Martin will remain subject to a life term. The judge must still decide when he will become eligible to apply for parole.

Martin is expected back in court Thursday as lawyers and the court work to schedule a formal sentencing hearing, IHIT said.
