BACKSTORY: Chatham-Kent OPP responded to a call about a gasoline theft on July 7th 2021. Officers persued the vehicle in question travelling westbound on Highway 401.
The victim’s vehicle ended up in the ditch dividing the highway. Cst. Sean O’Rourke approached the vehicle and discharged his firearm, striking the 24-year-old male victim. He was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
As a result of the SIU investigation, Cst. Sean O’Rourke is charged with one count of manslaughter and one count of criminal negligence causing death.
O’Rourke was arrested by the SIU today and released on an undertaking with conditions. He is required to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice at 425 Grand Avenue West in Chatham on February 16, 2022.
