The homicide is the 11th homicide in Surrey this year. There were a total of 11 homicides in Surrey in 2021.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said they were alerted of a shooting in the 14800 block of 108 Avenue at approximately 2:20pm on August 9th.
On arrival police and paramedics located a taxi driver and his passenger both suffering from gunshot injuries. The fare, identified as David Chavez-Jara, was pronounced deceased at the scene and the taxi driver was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.
Investigators said the victim was known to police and they believe he was the intended target.
Update August 29th: IHIT investigators have now worked with an RCMP forensic artist to create a forensic facial image of the suspect, based on the evidence collected.
