On July 19, 2025, paramedics responded to a call at a men’s shelter in the 100 block of Waterloo Street after a resident was found with a serious head injury.

The 63-year-old man was transported to hospital for treatment. Despite medical efforts, he later succumbed to his injuries and died on July 26, 2025. Police have since identified the victim as James Allan Thorne, a resident of the Waterloo Street shelter.

More than a month later, on August 26, 2025, the New Brunswick Justice and Public Safety Coroner Services notified police that the death was believed to be the result of foul play. The Saint John Police Major Crime Unit launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man’s injuries and death.

As a result of that investigation, 38-year-old Thomas LeBlanc was arrested by Saint John Police on January 29, 2026. He was charged with manslaughter and failure to comply with a probation order. LeBlanc appeared in court the same day and was remanded into custody pending a bail hearing scheduled for February 2, 2026.

LeBlanc appeared in court again today and remains in custody. He is scheduled to return to court on February 5, 2026.
