Guelph Man Charged with Second-Degree Murder After 80-Year-Old Woman Dies Following Brutal Assault

Guelph emergency services responded to a call near Wyndham Street North and Macdonell Street, where a woman was found unconscious on the sidewalk on August 31st at approximately 9:40am.

She was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The suspect had fled the scene before police arrived but was later identified and arrested on Sunday night.

A 34-year-old man from Guelph was initially charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault.

Three days later, the woman died in hospital as a result of her injuries.

Police announced on Wednesday, September 10th, that the suspect, who remains in custody, was formally charged with second-degree murder.

Police believe the two individuals had met before, though they were not well acquainted. Authorities have confirmed there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
