In May 2023, Calgary police responded to reports of a stolen cube van being driven dangerously through northeast Calgary. The vehicle had reportedly been taken after three suspicious people fled private property and had already collided with a building and a barricade.

Police tracked the van along Memorial Drive and tried to contain it so it could not reach downtown or nearby residential areas. Officers eventually attempted to stop the vehicle near Edmonton Trail and St. George’s Drive, but the driver refused to stop and continued swerving across the road. Police said the van broke through their containment and moved toward officers.

Around 11 a.m., a Calgary police officer with 13 years of service fired their weapon. Two men, 39-year-old Levon Fox and 46-year-old Wesley Davidson, were killed, while Fox’s brother, who was also in the van, survived and was arrested. No police officers or other members of the public were injured.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) investigated the shooting for more than a year, reviewing body-camera footage, police helicopter video, and recordings from members of the public. ASIRT ultimately recommended that the officer involved, Const. Craig Stothard, face criminal charges. He was charged with two counts of second-degree murder.

The preliminary hearing began in 2026 and is expected to last up to 10 days. Much of the testimony is under a publication ban.
