Manslaughter charges dropped against two accused – Alberta Major Crimes unit investigates the death of Tara Miller as a homicide

Turner Valley and Okotoks RCMP responded to a report of human remains near Hwy 552 and 128 Street East near Okotoks, Alta, on March 30th.

Police said the deceased has been identified as 37-year-old Tara Miller, also known as Tara Mbugua, of Calgary. Her death is being investigated as a homicide.

The medical examiner determined she died from blunt force trauma and strangulation, and was likely forced to ingest fentanyl.

Police announced they laid homicide charges against three men and a woman. 

  • Gurpreet Gill, 30, faces charges of first-degree murder, aggravated assault and using a firearm in an indictable offence. 
  • Greg Schuster, 30, is charged with manslaughter, aggravated assault and accessory after the fact to murder. 
  • Jared Burke, 24, is charged with manslaughter, aggravated assault and using a firearm in an indictable offence.
  • Shyana Popplestone, 25, faces a single count of manslaughter. 
  • Paul Fettig, 43, was charged with manslaughter
  • Ahmed Chehade, 32, was charged with manslaughter

Update: Manslaughter charges were dropped against two Calgary men in connection with the death of Tara Miller. The Crown stayed the charge against Ahmed Merhi Chehade and accepted guilty pleas from Paul Joseph Fettig on lesser charges, including forcible confinement, possession of stolen property, driving while prohibited, and breaching a house arrest order.
