Melfort SK Manslaughter Charge: Sam Stonestand Identified as Victim in Fatal Stabbing, RCMP Investigating

Saskatchewan 2026 Homicide Victim List

Authorities with the Saskatchewan RCMP’s Saskatoon Homicide Investigation Unit have laid charges against a man following a violent incident over the weekend that led to another man’s death.

Around noon on May 2, 2026, officers from Melfort RCMP responded to a report of an assault involving a weapon at an apartment located on the 100 block of Broadway Avenue South in Melfort.

Early findings indicate that two adult men were involved in an altercation inside the residence. During the confrontation, one man allegedly stabbed the other. Emergency medical services transported the injured individual to hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. He has been identifed as 36-year-old Sam Stonestand.

Following further investigation, 43-year-old Tom Cook has been charged with one count of manslaughter under Section 236(a) of the Criminal Code. He also faces three counts of failing to comply with a release order under Section 145(5)(a).
