Edmonton police responded to the area of 100 Street and 105A Avenue,
outside the George Spady Centre, on a report of a stabbing, on March 28th at approximately 7:15am.
Police arrived to find a 48-year-old woman on the ground, suffering from a stab wound. The victim was rushed to hospital where she died of her injuries. Police have not released the victims identity and said “it does not serve an investigative purpose and the EPS has a duty to protect the privacy rights of victims and their families”

Clayton Thomas Berard, 38, was arrested and charged with first degree murder and breach of recognizance(x2)
Update March 2026 – Clayton Berard, 45, was convicted in the fatal 2019 stabbing of 48-year-old Ida “Rose” Knife, who was attacked after leaving a shelter on March 28, 2019. The judge ruled the case relied on circumstantial evidence and found Berard was responsible, but had a reasonable doubt that he intended to kill due to likely psychosis at the time.
Hours later, Berard stabbed another man, Albert Stevens, who survived but suffered lasting physical and social impacts. Berard was found guilty of aggravated assault in that attack.
The court heard Berard has a history of mental illness, including schizophrenia, and had previously pleaded guilty to manslaughter in a separate 2019 killing of a cellmate. As a result, Berard has been found guilty of manslaughter and aggravated assault.
