York Regional Police responded to reports of a fire at a restaurant near Highway 27 and King Road around 3 a.m, on February 16th. When first responders arrived, they found the restaurant completely engulfed in flames. King Fire and Emergency Services quickly extinguished the fire, and upon searching the property, tragically discovered a deceased individual inside.
The circumstances surrounding the fire are being treated as suspicious, and the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office is now involved in the investigation.
Following an intense investigation, police have charged Saeed Alshoubaki, 22, of Mississauga, with second-degree murder and arson. The incident is believed to have been targeted.
On February 25, 2025, the Office of the Chief Coroner positively identified the deceased as Bassam MHAIDAT, 22, of the City of Mississauga.
Investigators are urging anyone who may have been in the area during the early hours of February 16 to check their security cameras or dashcam footage.
