York Regional police responded to a report of an injured male at an apartment complex in the area of Main Street and Millard Avenue, on July 14, 2024, at approximately 10:30 p.m.

On arrival, police located Blake Bibby, suffering from stab wounds. He was transported to hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

A gofundme campaign has been created to help support the Bibby family.

On Tuesday, July 16, 2024, Mckenzie GILL, 30, of Toronto, was charged with Second Degree Murder.

The accused and the victim were known to each other. Anyone with information is asked to contact the York Regional Police Homicide Unit at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7865.

UpdateSept 1, 2026: According to Global News, Mckenzie Gill, has been found guilty of second-degree murder in the 2024 stabbing death of her estranged boyfriend, 36-year-old Blake Bibby.

Gill admitted stabbing Bibby once in the chest at his Newmarket apartment but argued that she acted in self-defence. The judge, Justice Vanessa Christie, rejected that explanation. Although the court acknowledged that their relationship had been extremely volatile and that Bibby had been the main aggressor in their history of violence, the judge concluded that Gill was angry rather than afraid during the confrontation that led to the stabbing.

The judge pointed to several factors, including:

• Gill had opportunities to leave the apartment but did not.
• She violated a no-contact order by being with Bibby.
• She gave inconsistent accounts of what happened.
• Her 911 call did not clearly communicate that Bibby had suffered a serious chest stab wound, and the judge said Gill did not sound frightened or panicked.
• The evidence did not show that Bibby was attacking or threatening Gill with a weapon at the time.
• The judge concluded that Gill deliberately plunged the knife deeply into Bibby’s chest, knowing the injury could be fatal.

Justice Christie described the killing as the result of jealousy, rage and frustration after years of conflict, rather than a necessary response to an imminent threat. She ruled that the Crown had disproved self-defence beyond a reasonable doubt and that Gill’s use of deadly force was unreasonable.

Gill’s bail was revoked following the verdict, and no sentencing date has yet been set.
