On the evening of May 23, 2025, around 7 p.m., Carrot River RCMP responded to a distressing report of a seriously injured child under the age of 10 at a home on Shoal Lake Cree Nation in Saskatchewan.
When officers arrived, they found the child unresponsive inside the residence. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by both police and EMS, the child was pronounced dead at the scene.
The death was deemed suspicious, and the Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation.
A suspect, who was known to the child, was quickly identified and taken into custody.
Following the investigation, 23-year-old Karrena Young from Pakwaw Lake (Shoal Lake Cree Nation) has been charged with one count of manslaughter under Section 236(b) of the Criminal Code. She is scheduled to appear in Melfort Provincial Court today, May 26, 2025, via video.
Update: On May 30th, police said the charge against Karrena Young has been upgraded to second-degree murder following consultations with public prosecutions.
