Powerview RCMP responded to a report of a possible shooting on Hampton Road in Victoria Beach In the early hours of June 20, 2025, around 2:00 a.m.
When officers arrived, they found the bodies of a 29-year-old man from Winnipeg and a 41-year-old woman from Victoria Beach. Police are treating the case as a double homicide.
Investigators believe the suspect, who was seen driving a white truck, fled south on Highway 59 before police arrived. At this stage of the investigation, RCMP say the killings appear to have been targeted.
“We understand that a violent incident like this in a close-knit community is deeply troubling,” said Sergeant Evan Willcock of Manitoba RCMP Major Crime Services. “However, based on current information, we believe the general public is not at risk. We remain committed to keeping the community informed as the investigation continues.”
Update: The Winnipeg free Press has identified the victims as Sly Thibert, and Melissa Wilson. According to the victim’s father, the deceased were friends.
Update: On October 7, 2025, officers from Manitoba RCMP Major Crime Services, in collaboration with the British Columbia RCMP, arrested a 28-year-old man in Abbotsford in connection with a second-degree murder investigation. The suspect, identified as Mitchell Johanson of Grand Marais, has been remanded in custody and transported back to Manitoba to await court proceedings.
On October 22, 2025, Manitoba RCMP Major Crime Services, working with the Nova Scotia RCMP, arrested a 31-year-old man in New Minas for second-degree murder. Nathoniel More-Harrison, from the Rural Municipality of St. Clements, has been charged and will be returned to Manitoba to appear in court.
The Manitoba RCMP continues to seek out any information related to a white truck seen travelling south on Highway 59 at a high rate of speed shortly after the shooting.
