Toronto Homicide #31 – Sheldon Berman dies in hospital 3 weeks after an assault

Toronto police responded to a call of unknown trouble in the area of Montrose Avenue and Harbord Street  on June 2nd at approximately 10:44pm.

Police arrived to find Sheldon Berman, 60, of Toronto, suffering from critical, life-threatening injuries. He was rushed to hospital where he died on June 24th. According to the victim’s brother, he was autistic and suffered from schizophrenia, and was “very gentle, sweet, kind to everyone and very shy.”

Police said James Macleod, 25, of Toronto was arrested on June 25th, and charged with:

1. Aggravated Assault
2. Assault Choking
3. Assault with a Weapon
4. Attempt Murder

He is scheduled to appear in court at Old City Hall, on Wednesday, August 18, 2021, courtroom K. Authorities did not day what his charges will be upgraded to, but have classified the death of Berman the city’s 31st homicide of the year.
