Police say they were informed on March 7, 2026, that a 49-year-old man had died in hospital after previously being assaulted on February 21, 2026. Investigators believe the injuries from that attack may have played a role in his death, prompting the Serious Crime Unit to take over the case.

According to investigators, the assault is believed to have taken place around 11:30 p.m. on February 21 along Railway Avenue near Young Road. Prior to the incident, the victim was reportedly walking westbound from Young Road toward Yale Road with another man.

Police are now appealing to anyone who may have been in the area that night to come forward. Officers are particularly interested in speaking with people who were driving, walking, or cycling along Yale Road between downtown Chilliwack and Railway Avenue between 10:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. and may have noticed anything suspicious, witnessed a confrontation, or seen two men walking together.

Investigators are also asking drivers who were near the east end of Railway Avenue around Young Road between 11:15 p.m. and 11:45 p.m. to check their dash cam recordings. Any footage showing the road, sidewalk, or nearby areas could provide important information for the investigation.

Anyone with information or relevant dash cam video is encouraged to contact the Chilliwack RCMP at 604-792-4611.
