A youth has been charged with first-degree murder following a fatal shooting at a residence in Chesterfield Inlet, Nunavut, early on October 9, 2026.

According to the RCMP, officers with the Chesterfield Inlet detachment responded to a report of a shooting at approximately 1 a.m. on Friday.

When police arrived at the residence, they found an adult male suffering from injuries consistent with a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to the local health centre, where he was pronounced dead.

Following the incident, police arrested a youth in connection with the shooting.

On October 9, the Nunavut RCMP Major Crime Unit formally charged the youth with first-degree murder under Section 235 of the Criminal Code of Canada.

The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Nunavut Court of Justice in Iqaluit on November 16, 2026.

The investigation remains focused on the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting in Chesterfield Inlet.
