Emergency crews were called to a home near Midland Avenue and Steeles Avenue East around 9:30 a.m. on May 12th after the child’s father called 911. Police said the father was not home at the time of the incident and returned after first responders arrived.
Inside the home, officers found the little girl without vital signs, she was revived and taken to hospital, where she was pronounced dead on Wednesday.
Investigators later identified the child as 22-month old Oriana Cho and the mother as Si Ting Yang, 37. Police allege the homicide took place inside the home, though the cause of death has not been released. She has been charged with first-degree murder.
The mother was taken into custody on Tuesday and is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday to face the first-degree murder charge.
Police also confirmed another child was inside the home at the time and is safe. Investigators say there will continue to be a police presence in the neighbourhood as the investigation remains ongoing.
