Update: A second person has been charged with murder – RCMP investigates the homicide of Aaron Smarch in Whitehorse

Whitehorse RCMP responded to a 911 report of a person laying on the ground in the area of 4th Avenue and Ogilvie Street on February 2nd at 5:20am.

Police located the injured man and began life-saving efforts. Yukon EMS transported the injured person to the hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. The victim has been identified as 35-year-old Aaron Smarch of Carcross. His cause of death has not been released.

RCMP Major Crime Unit is looking to speak with anyone who may have had contact with, or was aware of the whereabouts of Aaron Smarch between 1am and 5:20am on February 2, 2023. Anyone with information, or who may have seen suspicious activity around the vicinity of 4th Avenue and Ogilvie Street, and the neighborhoods and businesses located in downtown Whitehorse between the hours of 3am to 7am on February 2, 2023 is asked to contact police at 867-667-5551.

Update: 18-year-old Norman Kendi, of Whitehorse, was arrested on February 6th, and has been charged with first-degree murder following the death of 35-year-old Aaron Smarch.

RCMP announced that a 17-year-old person has been charged with first-degree murder following the death of 35-year-old Aaron Smarch. The youth made their first court appearance on February 9, 2023, in Whitehorse.
