The 2024 Nunavut Homicide Victim List is available here

Iqaluit RCMP received a complaint that male had been found with severe injuries and was being medivac to Ottawa, Ontario on June 5th, 2024.

The victim who has been identified as Jimmy “Sam” Kownirk, later died as a result of his injuries.

Peter Toonoo was arrested on August 21, 2024. RCMP announced on October 31st that Toonoo has been charged with second-degree murder and was remanded into custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for November 6, 2024.

As a charge has been laid and the matter is now before the courts, no further information will be released by police.
