Kai Keller charged with the homicide of Nathaniel Burchat at the Edmonton Remand Centre

Edmonton police were called to the Edmonton Remand Centre (ERC) regarding an assault between two inmates. on Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2024, at approximately 3:05 p.m.

It was reported that a 26-year-old male sustained injuries during an altercation in ERC. He was transported to hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

An autopsy was completed on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2024, and the Edmonton Medical Examiner determined that Nathaniel Burchat, 26, died as a result of a blunt head injury, and the manner of death is homicide.

Update: Following an investigation Edmonton police charged Kai Keller, 32, with second-degree murder. His next court appearance is today, Friday, Jan. 17, 2025. Keller remains in custody.
