Residents of Kinngait, Nunavut, were placed under a shelter-in-place alert following a reported shooting on August 7, 2026.

The Kinngait RCMP responded to the report at approximately 4:30 p.m. and located a male suspect who had barricaded himself inside a residence in the 5400 block of Kinngait. Police established a perimeter while additional resources were brought in to assist with the response.

The Nunavut RCMP Containment Team and an Emergency Response Team from Ottawa travelled to Kinngait to support local officers.

The situation continued into August 8, when members of the Nunavut RCMP Major Crime Unit arrested 42-year-old Ezeevadluk Suvega. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder under Section 235 of the Criminal Code.

Police identified the victim as a 36-year-old woman who was known to Suvega. Her name is not being released out of respect for her family’s privacy.

Suvega appeared before a judge on August 9 and was remanded into custody. He is scheduled to return to court in Iqaluit on September 15, 2026.
