Rankin Inlet RCMP located a deceased individual on June 7, 2024 . Police said the death was suspicious in nature, and the RCMP were able to identify a male suspect and began searching for him.
The investigation lead the RCMP to issue multiple “shelter in place” alerts. The suspect was then located near the local firing range, just outside the community.
The suspect refused to surrender to police. RCMP Crisis Negotiators established communications with the suspect, who surrendered to police and was arrested without incident.
On June 8, Nunavut RCMP Major Crimes Unit charged Jack Ekwalak, 43, with First Degree Murder.
The victim’s identity has not been released at this time.
