The 2025 Hamilton Homicide Victim List is available here

On the evening of March 6, 2025, around 8:00 PM, the Hamilton Police Service received a call from an individual who went to check on a man at his home on Wakefield Lane in Waterdown.

Upon arrival, Hamilton Police and Emergency Services discovered the victim deceased inside the residence.

The victim has been identified as Dirk NYHUIS, known as Jeff to his friends and family. Following a postmortem examination, it was determined that Mr. NYHUIS died from gunshot wounds. The Homicide Unit has now taken over the investigation.

Update: Hamilton police have stated that while some details of the incident remain unclear, they do not believe it was related to robbery or drugs. The accused and Nyhuis were familiar with each other, but the nature of their interaction at the time of the incident is still being investigated.

Earlier this week, officers traveled to a small town in Alberta and arrested 40-year-old Cory Mahoney on a charge of second-degree murder. He has since been brought back to Hamilton to appear in court.
