Eric Mearow Charged with Second-Degree Murder After Fatal Assault at Algoma Remand Centre

At approximately 10:40 a.m., on October 8th, 911 Communicators received a report regarding the sudden death of a 25-year-old inmate at the Algoma Treatment and Remand Centre (ATRC).

Emergency services responded immediately, and the individual was transported to hospital. Tragically, the inmate was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

According to Sootoday he was identified by family as 25-year-old Nathan Pregent-Daoust.

Police said initial investigations revealed that another inmate had initiated a verbal altercation with the victim. The confrontation escalated when the suspect physically assaulted the victim by punching and stomping on them multiple times. The injuries sustained during the attack were determined to be the cause of death.

October 14, 2025: Following an in-depth investigation by detectives with Investigation Services, 40-year-old Eric Mearow was arrested at the ATRC and formally charged with second-degree murder.
