The 2023 Edmonton homicide victim list is available here

EMS responded to a report of a man in medical distress outside of a shelter in the area of 100 Street and 105A Avenue on January 2nd at 6:30am.

The victim was rushed to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Hospital staff noted injuries consistent with a gunshot wound and immediately contacted police.

An autopsy was completed on January 9th and the Edmonton Medical Examiner identified the victim as Shane Bakewell, 32, and the cause of death was a gunshot wound, and the manner of death is homicide.

Update May 2026:
According to CBC News, a 26-year-old Edmonton man convicted of second-degree murder in the 2023 shooting death of Shane Bakewell has been sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 13 years.

Justice Michael Lema said Harrison Belanger appeared to be seeking status and intimidation during the confrontation that led to Bakewell’s death, adding that the outcome cost a man his life. The shooting happened near the former Boyle Street Community Services building on New Year’s Day 2023.

After being shot, Bakewell managed to walk several blocks to the Herb Jamieson Centre, where he remained outside for more than a day before emergency services were contacted.

During sentencing, the judge pointed to Belanger’s escalating criminal history, use of a firearm while under a weapons ban, and lack of concern after the shooting as major aggravating factors. The court also considered mitigating circumstances, including Belanger’s age, signs of remorse, and the impulsive nature of the offence. Victim impact statements highlighted the devastating loss felt by Bakewell’s family, who had hoped he could rebuild his life despite years of homelessness. Outside court, Bakewell’s father criticized the shelter response shown in surveillance footage, saying his son was treated without dignity in the final hours before he died.
