Edmonton police announced on February 14th, 2023, that they are investigating the suspicious death of an infant. Edmonton Police Service Child Protection Section commenced an investigation into a five-week-old infant who was brought into the Stollery Children’s Hospital by EMS on February 5th.

Investigators said the infant was in medical distress and was admitted to the ICU where they passed away on February 8th, and Homicide Detectives took over the investigation. The cause of death has not been released.

Update August 27th 2026: George Russell Hulleman, has been found guilty of manslaughter in the death of his five-week-old son.

According to CTV News, an autopsy found extensive injuries, including brain bleeding and swelling, damaged nerves, and multiple fractures. Following the autopsy, Hulleman was charged with second-degree murder shortly after the report was released. During the court proceedings, however, a judge determined that his significant cognitive impairment may have affected his ability to understand that his actions could result in the baby’s death. He was ultimately convicted of manslaughter instead.

The court heard that the infant suffered extensive injuries, including brain bleeding and swelling, damaged nerves, and multiple fractures to his ribs and limbs. The injuries occurred while Hulleman was alone with the baby as the child’s mother slept in another room.

Hulleman told police that the baby had fallen from a couch. However, one doctor testified that the injuries were so severe they would be consistent with a fall from roughly four or five storeys.

Hulleman’s sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 18.
