Canadian police killed on duty in 2022 – 2023
RCMP Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald said Const. Rick O’Brien, 51, was fatally shot and two other officers were injured on September 22nd as they were attempting to execute a search warrant in Coquitlam, B.C. A suspect in his 20s was also shot and is in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
McDonald said O’Brien died of his injuries at the scene. One injured other officer is in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and the third officer suffered minor injuries and was discharged.
Nicholas Bellemare, a 25-year-old Coquitlam man, has been charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder with a firearm.
So far police have not revealed details about the investigation, other than saying it was a long-term probe.
Const. Rick O’Brien is the fifth officer to die in the line of duty this year.
