Sentencing Delayed in Fatal Saskatoon Shooting as Defence Struggles to Secure Gladue Report

The 2024 Saskatoon Homicide Victim List is available here

Saskatoon police responded to a call of an injured male at a residence in the 200 block of Avenue K North on February 10th at approximately 6:46am.

Once at the scene, police located 48-year-old Arden Panipekeesick who had suffered a gunshot wound, and had succumbed to the injury.

Police arrested 21-year-old Katlim Desjarlais-Kelly, and charged him with the murder. The victim and the accused are known to each other.

Tyler Desjarlais-Kelly is awaiting sentencing after being convicted of Manslaughter in the fatal shooting. Panipekeesick died after a bullet passed through a door frame and struck him in the neck inside his Saskatoon home.

According to CTV News, the sentencing process has been delayed several times. One delay occurred when a pre-sentence report failed to reach Desjarlais-Kelly at the correctional centre. Another delay followed because his lawyer was unable to find someone to prepare a Gladue Report, which outlines the effects of racism, colonialism, and an Indigenous offender’s personal background to help judges determine an appropriate sentence. With few qualified report writers available in Saskatchewan, Desjarlais-Kelly’s lawyer has now taken on the task himself, although he said he would have preferred the report be completed by an Indigenous writer. Sentencing arguments are now expected to take place on Aug. 28.
