Calgary police announced on January 10th that Robert MATTHEWS, 25, of Calgary, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. An 18-year-old man, of Chestermere, who was a youth at the time of the incident, was also charged with second-degree murder. He cannot be named under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
At this time, there is no known relationship between the men and the victim and police are not looking for any other suspects.
Update July 6th 2026
A Calgary judge has found 28-year-old Robert Matthews guilty of manslaughter, rather than second-degree murder, in the 2023 fatal shooting of Jordan Jacques-Vetten, a 33-year-old man experiencing homelessness. While Matthews admitted he fired the fatal shot, the court ruled the Crown did not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he intended to kill the victim. Instead, Justice Lisa Silver concluded that Matthews intended to cause bodily harm, which supported a manslaughter conviction.
Matthews will be sentenced at a later date. Earlier this year, he also pleaded guilty to stabbing a correctional officer with a homemade weapon while being held at the Calgary Remand Centre and received an additional eight-month sentence for that offence.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact police by calling 403-266-1234.
