Calgary Police announced on June 26th, 2026 that a 40-year-old Calgary man has been charged with manslaughter after the drug overdose death of 16-year-old Jordynn Atkins-Materi in November 2025.
Police say the teen and another 16-year-old met the man downtown before going to his northeast Calgary home, where drugs were allegedly used. The next morning, the man called 911 after finding Jordynn unconscious, but she died at the scene. An autopsy determined she died from the toxic effects of carfentanil.
After a months-long investigation by the Calgary Police Service’s Drug Investigations for Safer Communities (DISC) Team, Steve Phillip Gilbert Collins was arrested on June 25, 2026, and charged with one count of manslaughter.
Police say this is the first time the Calgary Police Service has laid a manslaughter charge in connection with an overdose death, highlighting its efforts to hold suspected drug traffickers accountable for fatal overdoses.
