Nishnawbe Aski Police responded to a call of a person in medical distress at a residence on Nursing Station Road on July 16th at approximately 2:00am.

On arrival police located Lee Conroy Kakekagumick, 37, deceased. His cause of death has not been released at this time.

At this time, Lenroy Kakegamic, 35 of Deer Lake First Nation has been arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault.

Update: Kakegamic was charged later with second-degree murder but ultimately pleaded guilty to manslaughter and to a charge of assaulting his domestic partner on the same date as the homicide.

At a sentencing hearing held in Kenora in July 2025, the prosecution requested a total sentence of 15 to 20 years, minus time already served in pre-sentence custody. The defence, however, argued that a prison term of eight to nine years would be more appropriate.

In sentencing reasons released last month, Justice John Fregeau detailed the aggravating and mitigating factors in the case.

The Crown described the killing as a brutal, excessive assault involving weapons, including a flatscreen TV and knives. The court heard there was prior intent to attack the victim, who was intoxicated and defenceless, and that three young children witnessed some of the violence. The accused’s record of violent offences and lack of remorse were also highlighted.

The defence argued that significant Gladue factors, including a childhood marked by abuse, addiction and domestic violence, reduced his moral blameworthiness.

Justice Fregeau called the death of Lee Conroy Kakekagumick a “near murder” and an aggravated manslaughter, but said the accused’s traumatic upbringing had to be considered.

He imposed a 12-year sentence for manslaughter, plus 18 months consecutive for assault. With credit for time served, the remaining sentence is just over eight years.
