Emergency crews were called to a house fire at a home on Martindale cres in Brampton, just before 4:00 am on December 4th. Firefighters and paramedics arrived at the scene to find the home fully engulfed.
Police located 5 occupants outside of the residence, and a 6th person, an elderly female, was found deceased inside of the residence.
Homicide and Missing Persons Bureau have taken carriage of the investigation and have taken a 33-year-old male into custody.

Update December 5th
Police said the female victim is believed to be 61-years old. According to reports the victim has been identified through court documents as Maria Manuela-Correia. A 34-year-old woman was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A 71-year-old man as well as an 11, 9, and 4-year-old child did not suffer any physical injuries.
Helder Vertentes-Arruda, a 33-year-old man from Brampton has been charged with one count of First Degree Murder and 5 counts of Attempt Murder. The accused is the victim’s son-in-law.
