Toronto police responded to a call for a shooting in the Eglinton Avenue West and Northcliffe Boulevard area on May 11th at approximately 5:07 a.m.
On arrival, police found Makayla Zanae Roxburgh-Carpino, 20, of Toronto, suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite life-saving measures by first responders, the woman was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Harold Santana Simon, 27, of Vaughan, has been arrested and charged with:

Update June 8th 2026: A jury has acquitted Harold Santana Simon of second-degree murder in the death of Makayla Roxburgh-Carpino, while finding him guilty of two firearms-related offences.
According to Global News, after the verdict was delivered, emotional scenes unfolded in the courtroom as Roxburgh-Carpino’s family reacted with anger and grief.
Simon had pleaded not guilty to murdering Roxburgh-Carpino, who was a friend of his former girlfriend, Sentoree Kamara. During the trial, Simon admitted possessing the loaded handgun involved in the shooting but maintained that Roxburgh-Carpino’s death was accidental.
He testified that he went to Kamara’s apartment in the early hours of May 11, 2024, to reconcile after an argument. Simon claimed a struggle broke out over the firearm after Kamara retrieved it from a dresser, and that the gun discharged accidentally during the confrontation.
The Crown argued that Simon acted out of jealousy and anger after discovering Kamara had been communicating with other men. Prosecutors alleged he intentionally shot Roxburgh-Carpino after entering the apartment and confronting the two women.
The jury ultimately rejected the murder charge but convicted Simon of unauthorized possession of a firearm and knowingly occupying a vehicle containing a loaded firearm.
A sentencing date has not yet been scheduled. Simon has remained in custody since his arrest and could face deportation proceedings after serving his sentence, as court heard he does not have legal status in Canada.
