Shante Trinity Paul Charged with Second-Degree Murder in Winnipeg’s 21st Homicide; Helen Annie Spence Identified

A 23-year-old woman is facing a second-degree murder charge after a fatal stabbing in downtown Winnipeg claimed the life of a 58-year-old woman.

The incident happened at approximately 2:45 p.m. on July 28, 2026, when Winnipeg Police Service officers responded to a report of a stabbing in the 300 block of Portage Avenue.

When officers arrived, they found a woman suffering from critical, life-threatening injuries. She was rushed to hospital but later died. The suspect had already left the area before police reached the scene.

Police have identified the victim as 58-year-old Helen Annie Spence, a member of Grand Rapids First Nation who was living in Winnipeg.

Following an investigation by the Winnipeg Police Service Homicide Unit, investigators identified 23-year-old Shante Trinity Paul as the suspect. She was arrested without incident during the early morning hours of July 29 and has since been charged with second-degree murder.
