Update February 17th 2026:
Justice Aubrey Hilliard ruled that Robert Ballard was not criminally responsible for killing his friend, Michael Murray, in March 2021, finding he was in a psychotic episode and unable to understand his actions.

According to the Hamilton Spectator, the judge determined that Ballard’s psychosis stemmed from an underlying mental disorder, not voluntary drug use, making him a continuing risk. Instead of prison, he will be held indefinitely in a psychiatric facility under supervision. Ballard expressed remorse, while Murray’s family said they remain devastated by the loss.
