On the evening of February 21, 2026, at approximately 5:00 p.m., officers with the UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service responded to a call for assistance on Nanibozo Street in M’Chigeeng after reports of a man experiencing a medical emergency.

When police and paramedics arrived on scene, they found a 29-year-old man on the roadway in medical distress. He was transported to the Manitoulin Health Centre, where medical staff made extensive efforts to save his life. Tragically, he was later pronounced deceased.

The following day, February 22, 2026, UCCM Anishnaabe Police, with support from the Ontario Provincial Police Emergency Response Team and the Ontario Provincial Police Community Street Crime Unit, carried out a search warrant at a residence on Mnaawnkwad Drive in M’Chigeeng.

During the search, officers seized more than $30,000 in Canadian currency, small quantities of suspected cocaine, fentanyl, and psilocybin, along with a range of ammunition, including 16-gauge, 12-gauge, 20-gauge, .22 calibre, 9mm, .45 calibre, and rifle rounds.

As a result of the investigation, three individuals have been charged.

Maria HARE, 26, faces charges of manslaughter, trafficking in a Schedule I substance, and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Jesse MIGWANS, 27, has been charged with manslaughter, trafficking in a Schedule I substance, two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a controlled substance, possession of property obtained by crime, and possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to a prohibition order.

James MIGWANS, 27, is charged with trafficking in a Schedule I substance, two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a controlled substance, possession of property obtained by crime, possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to a prohibition order, and failing to comply with a probation order.

All three accused individuals were held in custody pending bail hearings.

In a statement, the UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service extended condolences to the family and community impacted by the loss and reaffirmed its commitment to addressing drug trafficking and strengthening community safety.
