Police in Edmonton have laid charges against a 47-year-old man from Prince Edward Island in connection with the death of a missing 29-year-old woman.

Marika “Mika” Sutton was last seen in early August 2025 in southeast Edmonton’s Richfield neighbourhood. Her family reported her missing late September 2025, prompting an immediate investigation and a public appeal for information in early October.

By the end of that month, investigators believed Sutton had died and that her disappearance was the result of a criminal act. The case was then taken over by the homicide unit. Months later, on March 17, 2026, officers travelled to Charlottetown, P.E.I., where they arrested John Angus Joseph MacArthur. He now faces charges of second-degree murder and indignity to a body and has since been returned to Edmonton, where he remains in custody.

Police say Sutton and the accused were in an intimate relationship, and the investigation uncovered a history of domestic violence that had not previously been reported. As a result, her death is being treated as an intimate partner homicide.

Investigators are still searching for Sutton’s remains and believe they may have been disposed of along Highway 2 between Wetaskiwin and Lacombe sometime between August 22 and 29, 2025. At the time, the accused was driving a black 2014 Jeep Patriot with Alberta licence plate CFB 2578.

Officers are asking anyone who travelled that stretch of highway during that time and may have noticed anything unusual to come forward. They are also urging landowners, hunters, and others familiar with the area to remain alert for any signs that could help locate Sutton.

Police say multiple units and agencies assisted in the investigation, and they continue to encourage anyone with information to contact them or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
