New Westminster Police Department responded to a report of an un-responsive infant in the 1300 block of 5th Avenue in New Westminster on July 21st at approximately 4:20am.
NWPD determined suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and called in the IHIT to take carriage of the investigation. Homicide detectives are speaking with the family and friends to ascertain the specifics around what happened. Local support services have also been engaged.
Police said there is no ongoing public safety issue or investigative need, no names or further details are being released.
Update: The mother of the young child, Karma Dyck, was charged by investigators with manslaughter, aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, and failing to provide the necessities of life about 18 months after her daughter’s death, according to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT).
Earlier this year, Dyck admitted guilt to a charge of manslaughter. On July 27th 2026, she was sentenced to four and a half years in prison.
