A homicide investigation is underway after a fatal shooting in Timmins during the early morning hours of July 31, 2026.

Shortly after midnight, Timmins Police Service officers responded to reports of gunfire in the area of Balsam Street North near Fifth Avenue. When officers arrived, they found 31-year-old Jason Oliver Bartley suffering from life-threatening injuries. Police immediately secured the scene, recovered a firearm, and began providing emergency first aid until paramedics arrived. Bartley was transported to hospital in vital signs absent (VSA) condition, where he was later pronounced dead.

The Timmins Police Service Criminal Investigations Division has taken over the investigation. According to investigators, the victim and the suspected shooter were known to each other, and early evidence suggests the shooting was a targeted incident rather than a random act.

As part of the investigation, officers secured the crime scene and searched two residences along with surrounding outdoor areas for evidence. Additional support was provided by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), including members of the Canine Unit, Emergency Response Team (ERT), and Tactics and Rescue Unit (TRU). These specialized teams assisted Timmins Police in clearing a residence in the Cedar Street North area as officers searched for the suspect.

Despite an extensive search, the suspect has not yet been located or arrested. Investigators say the homicide investigation remains active, and more information will be released when it can be shared without affecting the ongoing investigation.

Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting who has not yet spoken with investigators to contact the Timmins Police Service Criminal Investigations Division at 705-264-1201. Individuals wishing to remain anonymous can also provide information through Crime Stoppers.
