On Friday, June 27, 2025, Niagara Regional Police officers from 2 District (Niagara Falls/Niagara-on-the-Lake) responded to a call about an altercation in the parking lot of a motel near Montrose Road and Chippawa Creek Road in Niagara Falls.
When officers arrived, they discovered that two men had been involved in a physical confrontation. One of the men suffered a serious head injury and was taken to a hospital outside the region for urgent medical care.
Following the incident, police arrested 55-year-old Gerald Philion, who was charged with Aggravated Assault.
Sadly, the 57-year-old victim remained hospitalized for several months before succumbing to his injuries on Wednesday, October 22, 2025. The Niagara Regional Police Homicide Unit, along with detectives from 2 District, took over the investigation.
As the case developed, Philion’s charges were upgraded to Manslaughter.
