On May 10, 2023, Maskwacis RCMP responded to a call reporting a dead individual at a rural site on Montana First Nation. The body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, where the death was ruled a homicide. The victim was identified as a 33-year-old Edmonton resident.
The investigation was taken over by the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit. Officers later learned that the victim had been involved in a confrontation at a home in Edmonton before being moved to the remote location on Montana First Nation and left there.
Following their investigation, police charged a 29-year-old Maskwacis resident and another Edmonton resident with manslaughter. The second accused appeared before a Justice of the Peace and was ordered to remain in custody, with a court appearance scheduled for Nov. 25, 2025, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Wetaskiwin.
